Top 20 Tips for Planning a Great Vacation

Make sure your
home is protected while you are away. The key is to make it look like
you never left.

Keep shades and
blinds in their normal positions.

Stop mail and
newspapers, or ask a neighbor to pick them up every day.

Put several
household lights on timers so they turn on and off at appropriate
times.

Arrange to have
grass mowed (or snow shoveled) while you're gone.

Make sure all your
doors and windows are locked.

Activate your home
alarm (if you have one).

Leave a radio on,
or put it on a timer.

Ask a neighbor to
park in your driveway overnight.

Have someone take
care of your plants while you're away or they will change colors.

Have someone take
care of your pets while you're away or they will change colors too.

Clean out your
refrigerator, do your dishes and empty all of your trash.
-
Take care of any
bills that will become due while you are away.
-
Remember to leave
a key with a neighbor or family member.

If you are one of
those wonderful souls who send postcards, preprint address labels
before you leave for those you will be sending cards to.

Set up a small
“vacation” notebook to jot down notes. For example:

when you get there – places you want to eat at, places you want to
see, things you want to buy,

Select an area of
your home to be 'packing central', a collection point for items that
you will be taking on your trip.

Where possible,
pack disposable items. Purchase travel sized items of toiletries and
first aid kits. If you have been saving the samples given away in
magazines, now is the time to use them.

Leave all your
worries and stresses behind. Chances are they will still be there when
you return!
